Why Buy Handcrafted Jewelry: 4 Reasons

Roslyn Fashion & Jewelry: Your Life in Color, Jewelry Care & Tips Handmade Jewelry

For the past few years, handcrafted jewelry has been all the rage. On every tv station, we see female broadcasters sporting beaded necklaces. Gemstone necklaces have replaced shiny metal pieces and these statement necklaces coordinate color with a wardrobe to highlight the newscasters’ well-known faces. We even tune into popular tv shows like The Good Wife and Scandal to see handcrafted jewelry that compliments popular fashion. So is artisan jewelry just another passing trend or something worth investing in? Why buy handcrafted jewelry?

What Makes Handmade Jewelry So Special?

1. The very definition of handcrafted or handmade means that artisan hands design and creates the finished product.  In mass production, machinery may crank out hundreds or thousands of pieces from a mold while an artist focuses on one individual design and makes it special. An artist might use a machine produced clasp or crystal, or use a machine to make a hole or polish a stone but all the materials are hand selected and all of the assembly is done by hand.

2. Sometimes, as in any art, a patron may be attracted to the final product without stopping to think about the amount of time and all the steps involved to really take a design from conception to completion. Jewelry artists, such as ourselves, generate new designs and collections based on a number of influences. Our designs are heavily inspired by nature; often we are drawn to the beauty of the materials themselves, and we are influenced by other art forms, including the ever-changing styles of fashion.

A question we are frequently asked is: how long does it usually take to create a necklace? The answer is not cut and dry because a jewelry artist might think about a design for days, weeks, months before buying or gathering materials. Sometimes there is homework to be done – researching cultures, period styles or trends, and we are often learning and tackling new techniques. Our customers often remark that they are amazed by the variety in our collections.

Trips to craft shows to hunt for materials from around the world are frequently taken. We might take all the potential materials for one necklace and play around for days, trying this with that until we like what we see. Then there is the actual assembly, which can be very time consuming depending on the complexity of the design. There could be many steps until the final clasp is attached. An artist’s time is valuable and difficult to assess.

Quality Trumps Quantity

3. The materials used is a major difference in the quality of a design. In mass produced products, many alloys are often mixed together to create costume metal jewelry. This is something you may not become aware of if you are not sensitive to metals. Some costume jewelry will fall apart if cheaply made. Gemstones and glass beads can last forever. Most jewelry artists will tell you about the components of their jewelry and whether there is a story behind the piece. These intimate details are part of the nuance of artisan jewelry.

4. An artisan made necklace is unlike any other in that inherent in the process of working by hand, the quality is higher for a few reasons. Firstly, an artisan takes pride in what is produced. Like any artist, a jewelry designer has a very intimate relationship with each piece designed; energy and love enter into every product and the artist wants the finished product to reflect that. A piece of the artist is stamped in some way into the piece- one cannot say that about mass produced jewelry.

Secondly, generally every piece is one-of-a-kind and you are the only person with that specific piece of jewelry. You will not see yourself at a meeting, event or in a restaurant wearing the same necklace as anyone else. You might even find yourself receiving compliments on your unique necklace; your wearable work of art.

Lastly, the artist was inspired to create this piece of jewelry having thought about the home the necklace will go to and often a relationship is created between the artist and the customer. As a first time buyer, you might just be attracted to a particular piece, but when you review the collection,  you notice many pieces that you would love to own or gift. There is a consistent look that appeals to you and so you may read about the artist, perhaps contact the artist and a relationship is formed. The artist works hard to make sure a customer is satisfied with their purchase. At least we do – customer service is of paramount importance to us.

A Lifetime Treasure

Gemstone and beaded necklaces have been around for centuries and have never gone out of style. They have been passed down within families as treasured heirlooms; the age of each wearer dictates how a particular piece is styled – a piece can have many looks and many lives. When you give a handmade necklace as a gift, the recipient knows you spent time choosing a meaningful present and will think of you every time the piece is worn. Handcrafted jewelry is an artistic and beautiful expression of individuality and connection.

I loved going to work each day for 30 years as a professional career counselor. When I retired, I explored my creativity and regard for crafts until I discovered beading. At age 68 I turned my new found passion- jewelry design, into a business. At age 72 I took on learning about social media marketing and developing my computer skills. I am sharing my journey from inception, to frustration, to elation -in the hope of inspiring others that 'it is not too late to start again'. Welcome to my re-invention!

  1. I’m with you Roslyn, every step of the way when it comes to hand crafted jewelry. India is still very traditional when it comes to gold and silver based jewelry and most of us will still go to the jeweler to either buy that unique piece or show them a design and ask them to create it for us. Admittedly, it is expensive as skilled craftsmen do have high labor charges but well worth the investment. One sees the difference when compared to fashion jewelry or those that are sold by retailers which have been created in bulk.

In fact, one major business family in India created a Jewelry line for diamonds and gold as part of their CSR initiative because they found that making diamond jewelry was a dying art form as craftsmen left their generations old family business to earn a new means of living. This company not only provides them with the best diamonds but also educates them in new technology and the craftsman continues to create his one of a kind masterpiece with no 2 pieces being the same.

The jewelry can be expensive or affordable depending upon what is being ordered but when one wears the pieces, one knows that someone is still keeping tradition alive and that is priceless.

Thank you Vatsala for sharing this info about the jewelry industry in India. My daughter/partner had a ruby ring made for her in New Dehli in just the way you described. She acquired a number of handcrafted items in India that she cherishes and regrets that she didn’t purchase more.

  2. I treasure my handcrafted jewelry much more than those bought from a traditional store. I have some amazing piece made of glass and 2 beautiful necklaces that a friend’s sister made. 90% of the jewelry I wear is handcrafted now that I think about it. They are unique on of a kind pieces and others have come from my traveling adventures.

Thanks, Heather Cameron for appreciating handcrafted jewelry. Artisans support one another and whether you have a piece designed by us or another, it’s wonderful to hear you own, wear and enjoy handmade jewelry.

  3. No question at all for me Roslyn, hand-made and hand-crafted always trump mass-made machinery jewelry any day. There is no comparison in my mind. The energy and individuality in a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry, is so very apparent to me. I’ve been a supporter of artisans for a very long time and even designed recycled watch part jewelry myself for many years. People always know the difference in my experience! I also support people who do handcrafted work because I support and encourage creativity and individuality. Your jewelry and Beth’s jewelry are beautiful and the care and love you put into each piece, shows. Great article, as maybe there are some people who haven’t explored buying handcrafted jewelry yet. After reading your article I know they will see the big difference for themselves!

Yes, thank you, Beverley Golden as I know you to be a lover of jewelry, handcrafted jewelry and you have an artist’s eye. We appreciate your compliments and support. We have also always been a consumer of handcrafted items. I started taking Beth to craft fairs at an early age, never dreaming that we would someday be vendors. In fact, when I fist started making beaded jewelry, Beth said it reminded her of my pottery collection.

  4. I agree that handmade items are much better than the mass produced ones. I think this applies in many fields and having something that has been custom designed rather than mass produced is a much better prospect from my point of view. Great post and reasons why Jewellery should be handmade Roslyn. Cheers, Ian

Thanks, Ian. Of course, I talked only about handmade jewelry, but appreciating handmade applies to all products. I was always a lover of handcrafted as it also supports the local community.

  5. I especially love hand crafted jewelry when I know a little bit about the artist and the story behind the piece. I remember that when I wear the piece. I think it connects us to something greater than just wearing any old piece of costume jewelry.

Thanks, we wholeheartedly agree Sherri; the story behind a piece enriches our creative process as well.
We buy from artisans wherever possible: from soaps, to garments, to housewares. It feels good to surround ourselves with objects imbued with nuance and positive associations.

Katarina, there must be so many wonderful shops in Italy. Just to think of Morano glass necklaces. I see them at craft shows. I believe necklaces made of glass beads are more popular than silver ones.

  6. Being a creative myself, I appreciate the value in handcrafted jewelry. I placed my first order with Roslyn and was not disappointed when I received the necklace set. Not only was the quality impeccable, it was packaged in a beautiful little gold string bag, with a hand written note. Quality and a personal touch will make me a repeat customer!

  8. I agree! Handmade jewelry is so much better, just because of its uniqueness in looks and stories. Since I’m a story geek, I love the background of the artist and the piece. Looks like your pieces are one of a kind, and should be celebrated as such!

  9. I appreciate your great efforts in providing for unique and well-crafted designs of jewelries and other accesories.

  10. I would add that with each handmade piece I’ve purchased, I always feel a bit of the artisan’s soul has been transferred into that work they created. Wouldn’t it be lovely if everyone developed this appreciation for handmade and handcrafted works, as then as artists, we would be able to ask a price for our work, that reflects the work and love that goes into it? That is a long way of saying that unfortunately in the dollar store mentality world we’ve created, as you said Roslyn, often people cannot distinguish the value in things that were made by hand! I will always be both a patron of the arts and a practicing artist whatever I chose to do! Love your work and this article and I do hope a lot of people have the chance to read it and reshape how they think about handcrafted for themselves!

Appreciate your thoughts Beverley Golden. It is our goal to help women see and appreciate the value of a handmade product. Most of our customers over the years developed a relationship with us. It is a tad harder to accomplish this with on-line sales, but our newsletters help them get to know us and other emails create dialogue building an ongoing relationship.

  11. I agree Roz, I do think hand crafted anything is a lifetime treasure and jewelry typically is kept and well taken care of. I know my mom will appreciate her piece for years to come!

  12. You share some great points about hand crafted jewelry. I love the items that I wear that were crafted by artists and that are one of a kind. One of my favorites is a necklace with a sterling silver abstract horse head pendant. The necklace is a square braid of tail hair from my horse, Kerrymor Madison. I just love it! Vickie

  14. Hi Roslyn,

I’m with you as well. Quality hand-made and hand-crafted jewelry trumps mass-made machinery jewelry in my book. I love hearing the stories behind each piece and getting to know the artisan(s) behind it. That personal connection is golden. You and Beth have done such a wonderful job with your pieces. I know that others see the quality and the personal touch you both provide in each piece. They will be definitely cherished for a lifetime.

  16. Totally would agree that handmade jewelry is by far so much nicer and yes, very unique as well:) My mother buys these types of unique pieces of jewelry from someone who also has a store (not sure it she has an online store)

Everytime I visit I always see so many nice pieces that I would love to purchase from you Roslyn! If I wore anything it would be the beautiful crafted necklaces 🙂 Thanks so much for giving us the 4 reasons that anyone should buy handcrafted jewelry 🙂 Great share!!

Thanks, Beth Blacker for being a supporter of artisans. Looking forward to tantalizing you with our collections. Appreciate that you bought from us for a gift.

  19. I agree with all of that. but honestly, I think the most compelling reason is that each piece is unique. You never have to worry, showing up at a soiree or opening night, that anyone in the crowd will be wearing the same piece as you. I think hand-crafted jewelry is the ultimate expression of individuality. Thanks for this, Roz; nicely said.
