What’s In A Name, Anyway?

Roslyn Our Journey adventure, breakdowns, business, challenges, craft shows, creative process, inspirational, opportunity

If you are a parent you know all too well the struggle of selecting a name for your child. Even so, I am pretty pleased with my grownup kids names, Beth and Evan and they seem ok with it too, (at least they haven’t changed it).Screen-Shot-2013-10-01-at-8.50.23-AM

You know what’s a lot worse?  Selecting a new name for my jewelry company!

Sure,  there’s lot of advice from social media marketers and I’ve read many articles to guide me in the process. And I’ve talked to friends, mentors, customers,  my daughter and myself. There seems to be two sides to every opinion: (1A) It should be clear & concise or (1B) it can spark curiosity. (2A) It should have the word jewelry or design in the name or (2B) it doesn’t really matter. It was easier trying to please two sets of grandparents.

“Does Social Media Marketing Ever Feel Like A Puzzle?”

If it’s so confusing–why am I changing our company name?

I’ll let you in on some of the reasons:

1. There is ANOTHER company called BeadsbyRoz & she sells bead supplies and spells it the right way. Can you imagine?

2. I spell BeadZ with a Z. That’s because my name is RoZ, not Ros. Since many people don’t know that, it helps the other company, not me.

3.  The name doesn’t include my daughter who designs some of our most beautiful jewelry.

4. And most importantly, I created my company name when it was more of a hobby pretending to be a business.  So the name no longer fits the direction of the company.

 What’s Next?

2013 is the last year of shlepping to live shows. My body agrees with me. So does my hubby who helps with the loading, unloading and storage of all supplies.

Then as I’ve learned so much about social media marketing these past two years, I also discovered that my shopping cart disguised to look like a website isn’t working the way it could.  That’s what happens when you are on a shoestring and do things with free help, good intentions and you don’t think you need to hire a professional to set it up right.

I Was Wrong and I’m Doing it Right, Now. You can thank the UK!

Just as searching for the perfect bead has always thrilled me with joy, I finally found my perfect web designer/SEO professional. She lives in the UK. That’s the beauty of today’s technology. It doesn’t matter whether we meet up in person or on Skype to be totally compatible. Which is why I now trust that I can continue to have meaningful relationships with my customers—without driving hours and hours on weekends to meet face to face!

All of this deserves a new name!

We chose one and after a few weeks, decided to keep searching. Now we do have one and want to sit with it for just a while. Go take a look at our current site before it disappears and while there select a gift for yourself and/or get an early start on a gift for another. I loved going to work each day for 30 years as a professional career counselor. When I retired, I explored my creativity and regard for crafts until I discovered beading. At age 68 I turned my new found passion- jewelry design, into a business. At age 72 I took on learning about social media marketing and developing my computer skills. I am sharing my journey from inception, to frustration, to elation -in the hope of inspiring others that 'it is not too late to start again'. Welcome to my re-invention!

I dying to tell it but it might not communicate our intent Terri without the complete design. My daughter & I are ying & yang, so we are creating it all to show our contrast.

  1. I love your description of the reasons for the name change. It is very difficult to do this (after you’ve been branded). Large companies buy one another and then they begin all over from the beginning with name recognition. I wish you continued success and look forward to reading about your stunning creations.

I guess Tina, I should be grateful my primary branding has been on facebook & I think I can link, promote, post about it & eventually change my page name. I just got an idea to run sort of a guessing game/contest to see who can guess my new name. I haven’t said anything about it yet on my page but next week is a good time to start.

  2. I’m sorry it was necessary for you to even have to do this. It’s like being reborn.
No doubt it’s been exciting, yet anxiety producing this entire process can be. Can’t wait to see the final result. There are no coincidences only connections, so perhaps this means that your “new” business will soar to heights you never imagined!!

  3. How exciting!! It will feel like you have a clean slate. All new things will come your way! I know it’s probably been a pain “sitting with it” but in the end, it will all be GOOD!

  4. That’s so exciting Roz, I’m really glad for you! Congratulations for your decision, your business will be a success!

  5. Enjoyed learning more about you Roz! Can’t wait for the unveiling of your new company name. Crossing fingers and toes for your continued success 🙂

  6. Roz,

I feel a bit privileged to know a bit of the background here. Still mystified at what your new business name will be. And of the new branding — That’s exciting!!

I know it will go well, and I look forward to seeing all that you will do with your “new toy.”

Best wishes on a successful launch,

Keri, You put me on this path and I’m excited about it. Seems many want to know so I created a bit of a buzz. Hope you play along with my Guess the Name game starting Oct 7. I’ll be posting hints each day at 11am on my FB page.

  7. I love your spirit of adventure as you take action, Roz, even if it’s not the exact “right” action. But, as we realize as we get wiser, all action is learning action… and the next one comes with infinitely more knowledge. I’m looking forward to your giant leap forward as you and your daughter combine your yin and yang in your new business “vitrine” … 😉 Here’s to grand success!

  8. How exciting to be a part of your journey to redefining success after 50, Roz. I can’t wait to hear your new name, watch the re-branding process and your rise to the success you deserve. Give your body the break it needs, get a tune up…I’ll help.
