Summer White: Hot Styles for Staying Cool

Roslyn Fashion & Jewelry: Your Life in Color Summer, White

It’s the dog days of summer; now’s the time to sport your best summer white looks. Summer white is a classic that will always be in style, and like black, white is super chic when done right and can go from morning to evening any day of the week. The color white looks fantastic against a tan and reflects the sun’s harsh rays while darker clothing holds in the heat. In a pinch, summer white is an easy, go-to look for effortless style, but like any trend – good styling makes all the difference.

The Timeless Classic White Shirt

Classic White button down shirt with statement necklace

“Solaris” is a citrine necklace with a modern edge; this luxe gemstone design adds dimension and interest to this professional look.

Most women have more than 1 white classic shirt – in fact, some fashionistas have up to 15 classic white shirts and claim they are all different. You should explore different designs that express your own personal style and consider the cut, fabric and design details. The different style options are vast: button-downs, roll-up sleeves, button-cuffs, stand-up collar, collarless, gauzy poet blouse, etc. They can all look stylish when worn with the right accessories.

You want your classic white shirt to be able to go from business to travel to casual, and a versatile choice is one in a no-iron, wrinkle-free fabric. Here are few fit details to consider when purchasing your classic white shirt:  A tailored style is more figure flattering than a loose cut. Rounded shirttail hem reduces bulk when tucked into a skirt or pants and when worn untucked, takes attention away from your hips. Check how the shirt fits over your bust so it is not too clingy or gapping between the buttons. Picture yourself in your fresh white blouse, summer cropped pants and a beautiful pair of shoes – the essence of easy and sophisticated style.

White T Time

white t-shirt nautical style

For a nautical look, drape a sweater over your white tee shirt and add a lovely blue and white necklace: “Maris”.

White tees are fashion staples as much as the classic white shirt. But all t-shirts are not made the same, if you want your summer white tee to become one of your lasting wardrobe pieces, then you want to consider a few things.  If the fabric is made from closely woven cotton, it will hold its shape longer, be more durable and really soft. A combination of cotton/modal or linen/cotton blend is generally the best fabric. A men’s tee, in one size smaller than you normally wear, works for a loose fit.  Tee shirts are made in V-neck and round necklines; if you have a long face, a V-neck will likely flatter you most. Test for transparency and check for the drape to determine if it will hold its shape. You can pair it with everything from a ball gown to your favorite denim cut-offs, this simple garment is an essential building block for style.

Notes on Summer White

BrandoWhite Parties are parties where attendees must wear all white. They began as circuit parties in the 70’s to support the LBGT community and are now popular theme parties held worldwide from The New Museum in NYC to pop-up dinners in Paris.

More than $20 billion is spent annually on t-shirts and every brand claims to have the ‘perfect’ or ideal white tee. This has resulted in prices rising from $10 basic to $150, with designer labels selling tees for even higher prices.

T- shirts were first worn as undergarments by Navy men a century ago. Then they became a workwear staple for blue collar men.

It took two Hollywood movie stars to popularize the Tee: James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause”, and Marlon Brando in “Streetcar Named Desire” and “The Wild One”.

On average, we expect our t-shirt to last about 4 years.

White Hot Summer Accessories

Summer white apparel, be it a crisp white pair of jeans, little white dress or jumpsuit, can be easily dressed up or down to fit any occasion. Wearing a glamorous all-white ensemble may start in the summertime but is so fabulous that luxurious all-white looks now extend into the winter months. The monochromatic outfit is the perfect backdrop for distinctive jewelry, taking your outfit from playful to formal, preppy to fashion forward.

At age 68 I turned my new found passion- jewelry design, into a business. At age 72 I took on learning about social media marketing and developing my computer skills. I am sharing my journey from inception, to frustration, to elation -in the hope of inspiring others that 'it is not too late to start again'. Welcome to my re-invention!

  1. Roz, I LOVE reading your blog posts and this one did not disappoint. I don’t have a lot of “white” clothing in my closet, actually, I have only one piece, which is the classic white shirt. My reasons for not having more white pieces is because, well, I’m a messy artist. Even when I wear an apron, I still manage to get paint on the back of my clothing. But.. if I wear something other then white, I never get paint on it. Ok, I lied 🙂

Gisele, thanks for much for your enthusiastic appreciation of our blog, our jewelry, our customer service. Never had a blog written based upon our services. Really blew me away. On a personal note, whenever I wear a brand new top that I am sure will become a favorite, I always drop something on it which sometimes stains it.

  2. I love wearing white and pastel shades, especially cotton during the Summer months, Roslyn, because they make me feel cool in the Indian Summer. Just wish Miss Coco would not jump on me when I wear the color. 🙂 More seriously, this is one color that lends a lovely background to longer necklaces and this is also the time when I bring out my bead necklaces. Thank you for the additional trivia on White.

Joe Butka, another reader has talked about having 2 wardrobes- the one she stains & wears in those work environments she knows they will get abused & her ‘nice’ clothes. You might suggest to Gisele that she wear her paint stained clothing every time she paints.

  3. I always see men wearing white in movies (usually shot in Florida or more humid climates) and wonder how they do it. A woman dressed in white is attractive, a man like myself dressed in white…. not so much! Lol. First off, I cannot for the life of me keep white, or indeed any lighter clothing, clean and fresh looking. As soon as I try it’s like I become a magnet for dirt and dust. The other thing is, I am a big bloke (6’4″ / 275+ Lbs) and I look like a mountain in lighter colours. (rant over). I think white clothing is a great background for your amazing jewellery and I did like reading the bit of history on white t-shirts. Great article Roz. Cheers, Ian

Ian Campbell, I haven’t even thought about addressing male fashion & color, because we don’t make jewelry for men- some others do. But I did think about adding the ‘White Pages’ or history trivia. We almost deleted them because this blog was not a historically based topic and I thought by including it, I could appeal to my male readers and others who may not yet be into fashion/jewelry but getting there. So, I’m glad you and Vatsala Shukla commented on them.

  4. It’s interesting, as my mother always wears white in the summer. White pants, white purse and wears her colour on the top and her jewelry. I used to wear white and very rarely wear it now, other than a white cotton blouse with black capris and black and white jewelry. Love the look of white, however, during my “black” years, I seemed to forgo white pants and tee shirts and focused on the black and colours. Great reminder for us all Roslyn, how why “white” is a fresh way to dress up your wardrobe!

Beverley Golden, sometimes we get caught up in a favorite color or combination, which is what we are comfortable doing. Personally, I find black pants or tops sometimes gettoo hot if I’m in the car for a lengthy ride. Years ago white fashion didn’t look as crisp as the fabric today permits. It’s nice your mom has a summer look.

  5. The great thing about wearing white is that it is so easy to accessorize. Anything and everything goes with white. I’m not much of a T-shirt fan anymore (except for sleepwear) but there are some lovely cotton knit shirts that look dressy enough to wear anywhere, anytime.

We agree completely with you Jackie Harder. White is so easy to accessorize and everything coordinates with it.Personally, I always look for cotton and do also sleep in an old white worn top.

  6. I love the way you’ve taken this blog into fashion–with jus the right touch for jewellery.

Just like your blogs. You’ve got just the right touch.

  7. I just love wearing white! I enjoy the feel of it on my skin, I notice this even when I use white cotton bed sheets. There’s something clean, fresh and pure about the colour white in addition to it’s seductive allure. I wrote this about the colour white in a blog: ‘White is cleansing and purifying. It brings a clean, fresh look and feel. Wearing white helps to cleanse the mind and purify the spirit. It is an uplifting colour and can propel your mood from down to way up high! The great advantage of white is that it pretty much goes with anything. Crystals and Essential Oils resonate with the higher frequencies to bring about healing.’ Now thanks to you Roslyn, I’ve got a beautiful selection of white jewellery to chose from, what can I say, I’m in my element! 🙂 You’ve made it particularly difficult this week to choose one or even two because I love them all! But if you had my arm twisted behind my back, well then I’d have to go for chic lariat ‘Country Moon’ ~ pure elegance. Thanks as always for sharing your stunning collection of pure magic Roslyn. 🙂

Michelle Williams, your comments always add such rich content to our blogs. When we repurpose them, I’ll be sure to reference your comments, with credit of course. Do appreciate your input as always and your selection.

  8. White is not a color that I wear at all. It just doesn’t look good on me. In fact, when I went to a women’s conference this year, I had to go out and buy a white top and capris because all-white was required for a particular event. (Up until then, the only white in my wardrobe was socks!) I wore a denim jacket over it and used turquoise accessories. But many people do look good in white, so this information will be very helpful to them.

  9. The highly ironic thing is since I first read this post and today, I just found out that at the convention I am attending next week, everyone on our health and wellness team is being asked to wear WHITE, as we sit together in the convention arena and all of us in white together make a very positive statement. Yikes! I only have one white blouse and another white three-quarter sleeve t-shirt. What is a girl who doesn’t wear white to do? 😉 Even my daughter doesn’t wear white, so nothing I can borrow from her. My goal is to dress up my blouse with coloured jewelry and stand out that way. It will be quite an adventure in white for me next week! Very timely with your post, Roslyn!

I know Beverley Golden that your goal to dress up white with colorful jewelry will work. If I may make a suggestion, quickly go on-line, be it to the tops we showed or another company and buy yourself 1 more white top. Sales are happening as we speak. With your dark hair and pretty face and colorful jewelry, white is a natural for you.

  10. Where do you get all this stuff Roslyn? I love all your little facts about clothing and fashion – like the ones about where t-shirts originated from and how long people tend to keep them. 4 years sounds an awfully long time, yet when I think about it, I’ve got a few t-shirts even older. Don’t tell anyone!

So I’ll let you in on our secret Clive Maloney for all the little facts. It is called google search and of course I read nany of the results. The further off page 1, the more likely something interesting pops up.And like you, many of our readers seem to relly like the info, in addition to seeing our jewelry. I definitely have t-shirts way older than 4 years. It must depend on the frequency of wear. Thanks for your great comments.

  11. Your post is timely as Summer White is the appropriate style to staying cool which provide a fresh canvas for you. This is to show an expression of your personal style with polish.

Thanks, Lisa Mason for your comment and appreciating this post. Just told another reader we are sending many folk shopping. This is a good time to pick up something that may be a new look for you. Go for it and enjoy.

  12. I must confess…while white looks great of folks, other folks, it is not a color I have much of in my wardrobe… guess paranoid, it’s see thru, it gets dirty easily and just a pain, though, like black, matches with most things, I still can’t do it… though love the pics and how these folks look.. and your jewels, of course!

  14. Hey Roz,

I always find so many great ideas on what kind of jewelry would go with what kind of outfit on your blog and now that summer is almost over, these ideas that you have shared here will definately be helping me with my own wardrobe 🙂 Thank you for always sharing such awesome tips!!!

Would you be open to asking a wardrobe question & we reply, or post an outfit with question like which necklace is best? As a social media professional, what do you think? A weekly FB post, a blog…

  15. Wow..$20 billion in sales just for white tshirts??? And the white parties started to support the LGBT community? I learn something new every time I read one of your blogs for sure!!!! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Beth Blacker, you are my inspiration for including historical facts. Had no idea how to weave it into our blogs about jewelry, or make it fun & interesting. All it took was months of reading yours.

  16. Hi Roz,

Thank you for another great post! I do look forward to reading your articles and always learn something new. I’m a history enthusiast and love to hear the history behind a subject. I did not know that t-shirts first started out in the Navy!

I love wearing white in the summer and your are so right. White provides a “fresh canvas” for accessories. I love all your suggestions!

Thank you, Robin Strohmaier for your enthusiastic response. I remember when you first started reading our blogs 2 years ago in your weekly blog group. I learned a lot from your tips. Thank you.

  17. I am so afraid to wear white, I only have two tops in that color. I am such a klutz that I spill everything, and always in the worst places! I tend to be a bright colored kind of gal, but I agree; there is something classic and sophisticated about white. Maybe I should buy more clothes, lol.

Liz Benoit Cozby, I always enjoy your responses to our blog. Love how you take our information in and consider our ideas. Given you often spill & I share a similar trait, when you purchase a few new styles, check the fabric and laundry label. If I can add no chlorine bleach to my top, I’m good to go & spills wash away.

  18. Roz – I don’t wear white shirts often because I’m already the pastiest/whitest woman on planet Earth, and white makes me look even more anemic and bland. I loved the history on t-shirts that you provided; I had no idea about the Navy requiring them for over 100 years, and I’d never heard about circuit parties before. Interesting stuff!

  20. What an informative article. Oh, it’s you and you always have top quality ones. LIke most women, I have a lot of white shirts. However, I hardly ever wear them; I just prefer colors. Definitely adding a beautiful piece of jewelry would spruce them up.

  21. So pretty, Roslyn. I especially like “Halia: Green Shell Necklace Set”. Each season I have to replace my white cotton shirts. Not because they get worn too much but because I tend to stain them. It’s so frustrating. But, I do love wearing white in the summer, it helps me keep cool. Thanks for sharing.

  22. Although my mother and daughter both wear white, I seem to be a ‘black’ person when it comes to clothing. I used to wear white, yet find it challenging to keep clean. The great thing for me about white, or black, is that everything goes with it. I do love black and white together and have several blouses that combine the two. Great history in this post and I seem to have known about white T-shirts and the navy, maybe because my former husband was a navy person before we met. I think he mentioned that he would tuck his cigarette packs (he smoked back then) in the cuff of his white T-shirt, so they were always handy. Love all the jewelry and no matter which of your pieces someone chooses, it goes with white!

Thanks Beverley Golden for your comments. When I look at your coloring, I think white would look good on you. It does keep you cool & when I wear black it draws the sun & heat. Today’s fabrics are bleachable & i’m not staining as much. My hubby, an Army vet tucked his pack in his rolled sleeve too. Must be a Veteran guy think or just another way to look cool.

  23. I don’t wear a lot of white due to being see through, easily dirty and shows my fat rolls. lol However, I wish I could wear it more.. it’s like black and everything goes with it… especially all of those gorgeous jewels!

    1. Kristen Wilson, I always put my hand under the fabric to check if it is see thru. If yes, I don’t buy it. There are pros & cons to white clothing & as I see it, the pros outweigh the cons. Thanks for the compliment.

  24. I went shopping today for a new sassy white summer top and came home with everything but…… guess I will have to go shopping again! Loving the fun article and viewing all the jewelry choices that would look fabulous with a summer white hot.

  25. I agree that white clothing looks great with tanned skin and it’s the perfect fresh canvas to show off beautiful jewellery. I don’t wear it so much these days as between my work and the Goddesses, it’s a great canvas for everything else as well. Love reading your fashion tips and the information about tee shirts was really interesting.

  26. Thanks for the picture of Marlon, Roslyn – lol. He wears it well! I love the look of radiant white, especially in summer, though I tend to wear a softer cream as I think it looks better on me. Love the styles and the jewelry !

  27. Hey Roslyn,

As I had already left a comment last year I just wanted to come here and say how wonderful I think all of your jewelry pieces are, especially matching them with white for summer 🙂

Always beautiful and matched up perfectly 🙂

    Thank you!

  28. White and black are such great neutrals that can be accessorized wildly, colorfully, quietly, depending on your mood. When it comes to T-shirts, I have stopped wearing the typical under-garment type shirts, but love the T-style with cap ‘n’ cuffed sleeves or with a gentle boat neck. Mostly it’s the weight of the fabric I like the best. P.S. I see “my” Blue Lace necklace is on sale. One of these days…if no one else with excellent taste snatches it up first!

  29. Thanks, Jackie Harder for your comment. I am all about the fabric, neckline & sleeve too . I have 1 white button down & 1 white Tee and I choose when I will enjoy wearing them. As to your favorite blue necklace, given we are always making new ones, your favorite could be available when you are ready to treat yourself.

  30. Your post arrived just in time. I planning to attend a conference next week and have dreaded going through my closet figuring out what to wear. The summer white idea looks like a winner. I do have a nice white blouse and several white t-shirts. You just made my packing one less thing to worry about.

  31. Roz,
