Oh baby, it’s cold outside. Yes, it’s sweater time and there’s an art to styling sweaters and necklaces. We love wrapping ourselves up in sweaters like long lost friends, but at this time of year, with the flurry of social activities, we want to look put together every day. Styling your jewelry well will invigorate the coziest of sweaters, accentuate your best features and elevate this winter wardrobe staple.
Consider these styling tips to make your sweaters sing through the holidays:
A Double Pocket Go-To For A Layered Look
The Classic Blank Slate
The standard pullover doesn’t have to be drab. Think of it as a backdrop for a fabulous focal point that is made with “Lynx”, a dramatic statement necklace.
Pullover with Long Side Slits, DKNY.com, Sale – $207
“Lynx” Tigers Eye Gemstone Bib, $130
Casual Chic That Can Make a Real Statement
An oversized, boatneck sweater has an easy feel that calls for a funky necklace in either bright contrasting colors or co-ordinating hues. Edgy “Savanna” has both gold and silver tones paired with khaki spikes, it’s neutral tones and dynamic features are an intriguing addition to this cool look.
Baby Alpaca Marfa Pullover, PeruvianConnection.com – $159
“Savanna” Fall Fashion Jewelry, $52
A cowlneck adds a lot of volume to the neckline so making a good styling choice is critical. Select a high choker that will lay above the cowl or a rope necklace. “Sandcastle” is 6′ long with a clasp so you can wear it many ways. For a sophisticated look, wear it very long with a knot tied in it or wear one layer high like a choker and drape two more long layers below like a festive garland of golden sparkles.
Fine-gauge Merino Cowlneck Sweater, Orvis.com – $89
“Sandcastle” Long Crystal Beaded Necklace, $65
Master Comfort And Elegance With This Duo
This lovely wine colored tunic has a jewel neckline which exposes the breastbone and provides an alluring canvas that begs for attention. A collar, bib or choker (“Cheyenne”) with flowing fringe will adorn the neckline and décolleté beautifully.
Chevron-Stitch Merino Tunic, Orvis.com, Sale – $79.40
“Cheyenne” Tigers Eye Boho Choker, $80
The Tapestry Cardigan Never Goes Out Of Style
This gorgeously textured sweater displays the artistry of knitting. Pair a special sweater like this with a beaded necklace that draws out one, or in this case, all of the exquisite colors of the hand painted yarn.
Impressionist Alpaca Cardigan, PeruvianConnection.com, – $239
“Swallowtail” Handblown Lampwork Glass and Gemstone Necklace, $58
A stylish graphic knit requires something either very light and metallic or something very bold in the same palette. “Harlequin”, an architectural statement necklace in black and metallics, has a graphic, three-dimensional quality to it and complements the color blocked top. It would also add polish to a monochrome crew neck taking it from ordinary to extraordinary.
Graphic Shiny Rayon Stripe Knit Top, KarenMillen.com – $140
“Harlequin” Black Agate and Pyrite Necklace, $88
A Great Way To Flatter Your Curves
Accentuate the lines of a V-neck sweater with a long tassel necklace or pendant necklace. “Harvest” features a carved jade flower pendant and mixed jade in rich earth tones, a lovely pairing against this cozy chocolate brown sweater.
Dahlia V-Neck Sweater, Baukjen.com – $195
“Harvest” Mixed Jade Pendant Necklace Set, $56
Peek-A-Boo Necklace Sets Your Outfit Apart
A fine knit wrap sweater calls for a choker or collar necklace that doesn’t interfere with its design details. Our “Matrix” necklace lays gracefully along the collar bone; it’s three braided strands mirror the drape of the wrap sweater and flatter your neckline.
Callington Wrap Sweater, Baukjen.com – $155
“Earth Tone Matrix” Braided Czech Glass and Crystal Necklace, $72
Traditional Doesn’t Need To Be Boring
An embellished sweater is a must for the holidays. You can style this lace cardigan daintily or play up the theme of the detailing. “Elsa” is a floral statement necklace whose magical glow enhances its femininity and winter wonderland feeling.
Lace Panel Cardigan, KarenMillen.com – $170
“Elsa” Green Chalcedony and Pearl Floral Necklace, $78
A Touch Of Luxury Without Breaking The Bank
This dressy fine gauge metallic-silver cowlneck requires something sleek and elegant like the “Moon Shadow” lariat. A turtleneck paired with one of our long lariats would also be great with jeans and boots for a more casual downtown look.
Celestia Pima Cotton Cowl Neck, PervianConnection.com – $149
“Moon Shadow” Plum Lariat with Freshwater Pearls and Swarovski Crystals, $84
While a scarf may add a colorful splash to your warmest winter gear, when your remove those layers, you still want something sparkly atop that sweater.
Glance through our necklace collection and we are sure you will find that there is a jewelry fit for every sweater and occasion.

what a wonderful guide on what necklaces to wear with different necklines. I never would have thought to wear a necklace with a cowl neck before! For a plain pullover I always wear a long strand of beads, but using a bold statement necklace like the one pictured here is a great idea. I think I’ve just decided what to wear to my next holiday party!!!

So glad Lisa Swanson, we gave you some new ideas. Appreciate your comment.
What a fantastic post…now I can picture the type of jewelry to wear with specific sweaters! Is there a specific style of jewelry to wear with let’s say a sweater with a busy pattern vs a plain pattern or no pattern at all?
Author
Hello Gisele, Thank you for your comment. So pleased you enjoyed the blog. For a sweater with a busy pattern choose a necklace with one or two (at most) of the colors in the sweater or stick with metallics. For a sweater with no pattern at all – go to town. Choose a beaded necklace that pulls the colors in your top and bottom together to brighten it up and coordinate the outfit or if wearing a monochrome outfit (like the 2nd, all black ensemble), select a striking statement necklace to add some color and interest to your look. Hope that helps. Happy styling.
Love the jewelry and the clothes. And what great tips to keep us fashion forward

Thanks for your comment. Glad you like seeing jewelry and fashion.
I’ve got my eyes on the tips for jewelry with cowl necks – I love them and normally don’t wear necklaces but go to town with earrings and brooches. Time to make a new fashion statement for myself, Roslyn!

So happy we gave you a new idea Vatsala Shukla. You are a fashion lady and jewelry lover.
I love this helpful article on what jewelry to wear with sweaters because I’m often unsure! Yesterday I wore a cowl neck sweater but opted for no necklace…I just wasn’t sure whether to go long or super short. My biggest wardrobe/jewelry conundrum is a crew neck sweater over a blouse–do you opt out of a necklace? I never know. My favorite here is the graphic sweater with the bold necklace. Usually I’d forego the necklace with a graphic top, but your combo is brilliant and certainly attractive. Great examples, and I learned something, so thanks Roz!

I love the ideas for pairing sweaters and jewelry. I am especially impressed by the idea of the textured sweater – using a number of the same colors in the sweater and the necklace and earrings.

Thanks for your comment & glad we could provide a new idea.
Love the style tips. I always worry that a busy neckline — with ruching, lace, special designs. multiple colors, etc. — would not do well with most necklaces. You make a good case for matching the type of necklace with the neckline. Clearly, I need to experiment more. 😉
Author
Jackie Harder, you are not alone. Most of us match a few together we are pleased with and stick with t. Enjoy experimenting.
These are great tips! I personally want that pink sweater! CUTE!
Author
Welcome to our blog and hope you treat yourself to a pink sweater. Pink is a hot color this year.
Great ideas! Especially with the embellished sweater. I always thought that meant no necklace. Good to know.

Being someone who always wears V-necks, I really enjoyed reading all the different necklace pairings suggested for other necklines. My style always has me wearing a pendant on a silver chain that sits just above where the V of the sweater begins. This way, my necklace is always visible. The rare time I will wear a longer silver chain with a pendant/necklace that sits mid chest. Thinking about my dear mother, she seems to have the jewelry pairing down, as she wears crew necks and cowl necks plus v-necks. I absolutely love the Peruvian Connection sweater. Definitely my style and aesthetic. Reminds me of the knitted sweaters my mother just to make for me, way back. Even back then I loved combining colours together that often were not “supposed” to go together. Your pairing of “Swallowtail” with it, is a gorgeous compliment to the knitting artistry of the sweater. Something hear for every woman. And of course you know I believe a neckline without a necklace, is very bland indeed.
Author
Thanks Beverley for your contribution. I used to collect yarn and didn’t know how to knit because I loved putting colors together in a basket. I might have to keep Swallowtail as it is one of my personal favorites. My style of dressing is Peruvian Connection, Sundance, interesting design & color combinations.
These are such wonderful ideas Roslyn. I rarely wear necklaces when in winter knitwear as I’m never confident about making them work. You are so right about wanting something beautiful to show when you’ve taken off the colourful scarf. I really love the idea of the pendant necklace with the v-neck and the Wassily (a particularly beautiful piece) would really make a plain cardigan shine. I’ve pinned this so I can easily refer to the guide when the cold weather hits us again. Thank you for a great guide.

Great advice for small business owners especially ones that work from home, like me. I tend to forget how to style. Thanks for sharing.

So right Sabrina Quairoli, we don’t dress up often, but I put on earrings & sometimes a necklace too when working from home. It makes me feel ready to work & get down to business.
Your pieces are so beautiful. Living in the cold Midwest I wear a lot of sweaters and you’ve given me great inspiration to dress them up a bit more!
Author
Glad to hear this Crystal. I’m sure dressing them up a bit will lift you up as well.
You have opened my eyes to how necklaces can enhance my sweaters. Thanks
Author
Thanks Linda, glad we could enhance your knowledge.
I love that you give so many different options. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, because of a metal allergy, but I would totally rock a necklace over a cowl neck sweater!
Author
Welcome to our blog, Quirky Chrissy. I understand about metal allergy. That is why I designed the 6′ rope, so no metal has to touch the skin.
Thanks for some great tips of how to match sweaters and jewellery. Always nice to read your advice and to see the nice necklaces you have to offer. 🙂

Roz,
This is just great! I love how you combine the current fashions with your necklaces, while helping us answer the age-old question of what to wear with all different necklines. I always run into this in winter, when wearing higher neck sweaters or ones that don’t seem to match a necklace. I’ve been wearing your necklaces and having such a great time pairing them with all my sweaters.
Author
Thanks Hope Stanger for your comment. So pleased to see you getting a lot of use from your jewelry in all seasons.

Roslyn,
I love this blog. The idea of taking the sweaters and pairing them with your jewelry for ideas of how to wear them is fantastic. Sometimes if you are in a hurry trying to decide what to do, what looks nice with what your brain is going in all directions, but this blog covers a wide range of sweater styles and the types of necklaces that work well with them. Truly, a great idea!

Would have loved to see the examples or a similar necklace on those outfits or tops… hmmmm.. but great write up anyways. I have to say that I don’t always wear turtle necks because when I do… I forget I have jewelry on and pull at it.. luckily, only broke one!
