Jewelry Storage: How to pack jewelry for a vacation

Roslyn Jewelry Care & Tips jewelry pouch, packing jewelry, Summer Vacation, Versatile Jewelry

Summer time and the living is easy… but sometimes getting ready to go on vacation can be hard work! We do so many different activities whilst we’re away, which makes packing for every eventuality a tough call. Not only that, if you’re anything like most women I know, then you’re also responsible for packing the family suitcases.

In the hustle and bustle leading up to departure we tend to rush things. Taking special care of how we treat our jewelry can get kicked to the curb. Countless people come back from vacation with broken pieces of jewelry. So, I thought I’d share my years of experience and show you how to pack your jewelry for a vacation. This will help to minimize the likelihood of damage to your prized possessions.

Faced with packing  jewelry for travel, you have several options:

  • You can pack your expensive gold and diamonds. The ones you don’t get to wear on a daily basis
  • You can pack the earrings and necklaces you wear daily
  • You can decide not to bother packing anything but the earrings you have on
  • You can throw in your recent purchases bought at a home show that hubby doesn’t know about

The one thing all these have in common is that you need to make sure they can be safely stowed away in your luggage, if need be, without the worry they may get damaged. There are lots of options for jewelry storage, but these are my top  three travel jewelry essentials to cover most travel needs.

Leather travel jewelry rolls

If you’re traveling light and haven’t got much space, then a jewelry roll will slip easily into a side pocket. The only issue with this is it might get knocked around a bit. So, I like to make sure the jewelry I stash in a roll like this is wrapped in tissue paper. Of course, if you have enough space in the main part of your bag, you can use your clothes to make sure the jewelry is well padded whilst traveling.

This is a classic buckled jewelry roll in leather. Once unbuckled, it unfolds to a panel containing 3 large zippered pockets and a snap closure ring bar. At the bottom of the roll is a leather panel that snaps open to section with seven sets of holes for your earrings and pins. It’s a lovely addition to any set of luggage and holds plenty of jewelry for a short vacation.

You can pick up the Buckled Jewelry Roll below from Amazon for around $50 and because it’s made of full grained leather it will last you for years of traveling to come.

Small travel jewelry boxes

On longer vacations or when you’re going away to celebrate something special you’ll probably want to take more jewelry with you than you can hold in a small travel jewelry roll. If you’re lucky the special occasion might even mean that you’re bringing something extra and precious back with you. In that case I would generally opt to take a small travel jewelry box with me. I love semi-rigid boxes, but you could equally opt for a more traditional rigid one.

This Jet-Setter Tiara jewelry case comes in some beautiful patterns. It has unique individual visible pockets and versatile removable pouches. With all that said, this compact design has 24 individual compartments with an expandable zipper bottom!

You can pick up this PurseN Tiara Extra Large Jet-Setter Jewelry Case at Amazon for around $66. I love this pattern, but it comes in a whole variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

Travel jewelry pouch

Or you can pack one necklace that can be worn in many ways. The easiest way to store a single necklace is in a pouch like the ones that we deliver our jewelry to you in. The one pictured below is an extra special Cathayana Jewelry Pouch, which you can buy from Amazon. Just pad it with some tissue paper and/or bubble wrap and you’re good to go.

I think the best vacation happens when you only have to pick out ONE thing to wear. Well, it can’t be  just one outfit for the week, but it could be one necklace!

We’ve created several versatile styles and the one that is featured below is our 6′ rope. What makes ours unique is it has three distinct patterns which coordinate with each other. It creates interest and allows for many magnificent beads to be highlighted. In addition to the basic design, a rope can be worn in several ways; twisted, wrapped, knotted, worn towards the back.

Made by creating 3 distinct yet co-ordinating patterns in one palette using Swarovski crystal, Czech glass, and freshwater pearls. You can adjust the number of strands that fall by opening the small trailer hitch clasp. You can use it to dress up or dress down.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so take a look at the different colors available and ways to wear this one necklace:

Click here http://earthandmoondesign.com/product-category/necklaces/sautoir/ to see our range of ropes. They are currently in stock in purple, called Jilly (not shown) and “Pretty in Pink” above. The 6′ rope is a popular style both for its attractiveness and versatility. It has been made in teal as seen above, “Refresh”, brown- “Sandcastle”, and “Black and Silver”, all available now and a rope  can be customed ordered via our contact form.

Just imagine only needing to take one necklace with you and creating a different look each time you wear it. Which way would you like to wear it and in what palette?

  4. Hi Ros! I have been debating about taking jewelry with me on vacation. I think I would pack it in my carry on. Worried about lost luggage from all the stories. Anyway, I just happen to have one of these gorgeous rope necklaces and now I know what to take along. I could wear it everyday since it is so versatile. Thanks for the advice. You made this portion of my travel anxiety disappear! 🙂

What an awesome blog post! I love how you included the video..so entertaining and pleasing to listen to as I read what you wrote. I love the suggestions you gave about how to pack up jewelry for a vacation. I don’t have any appropriate way to do it so I normally go with whatever I have on and don’t bring anything else.

Perhaps I gave you an idea when someone asks what could they get you for a gift. You could say you need a jewelry pouch and lets face it- you do go away alot so you have a nice safe way to pack along your jewelry. Thanks for enjoying video and blog.

  7. Roz,

You know I’m very simple in this area.

I am one for the jewelry pouch. In fact, for this upcoming trip, I’m using the little bag you sent my earrings in…. 😉

Keri, One of the reasons I love to package bracelets, earrings and lite necklaces in an organza bag or purse/pouch is that the bags are reusable. Enjoy your upcoming trip and I know you will have your earrings traveling safely.

  8. I have a business convention coming up at the end of the month and this is the perfect timing for this post! I don’t get to travel much and hadn’t even thought about how I would pack my jewelry until now. Thank you for an excellent blog!

  10. My family is planing a trip for Christmas and I was wondering how to pack my jewellery. I usually don’t take everything I have with me, but this time we will have a longer visit abroad. Best regards

Welcome to our blog Karen Bradley and thank you for your question. It is best to decide on your clothing so you know what jewelry to select to coordinate. Even for a longer trip, it is best to stay with 2-3 basic colors. But I think you are really asking about the physical packing. I would purchase a jewelry traveling pouch, Amazon has many to select from and then I would carry that pouch in your handbag when flying. Don’t check it inside any luggage. If you have any further questions, we will do our best to assist. You might also want to own a versatile necklace, such as one of our ropes, that can go with many outfits.
