Thoughtful Gifts For Mom

In today’s parlance the old adage “It’s the thought that counts” is primarily seen as an excuse for uninspired presents. To us, it is a strong urging to understand the things that will thrill and delight the woman who brought you into the world. When we look to buy our moms a gift, the main thing is to show them that we recognize what makes them wonderful.

“A gift consists not in what is done or given, but in the intention of the giver or doer.”

~ Lucius Annaeus Seneca

I loved going to work each day for 30 years as a professional career counselor. When I retired, I explored my creativity and regard for crafts until I discovered beading. At age 68 I turned my new found passion- jewelry design, into a business. At age 72 I took on learning about social media marketing and developing my computer skills. I am sharing my journey from inception, to frustration, to elation -in the hope of inspiring others that 'it is not too late to start again'. Welcome to my re-invention!

Thanks, Susan Mary Malone. Nice to receive this compliment. Next time when in the mood for a new necklace perhaps you will select a Lampwork one. Hand-blown glass is as special to a jewelry artist as words to an author.

Thank, Renee Groskreutz for your lovely words. The lucite flowers are hand painted and often viewed as wearable art. I’m sure mom would love it and might let you borrow it.

I understand Rachel Lavern as I’ve been guilty of giving ‘that look’ too. For me, it means, ‘you should save your money.’ Truly appreciate all gifts from my children and love wearing and using what they bought me as I’m sure your mom does too.

  1. My mom has passed some years ago but she loved jewelry. She kept telling me not to give the jewelry to anyone. That was her gift to me. She would have loved the amethyst piece. Beautiful!

Sabrina Quairoli, every year around this time I do think of all of us who have lost a mom. I love that I wear my mom’s sapphire ring. You might want to wear several pieces of her jewelry on mothers day.

Thanks, Karen. Sometimes it isn’t easy choosing gifts and we hope this article made it a bit easier to purchase one for mom or oneself, a mother figure, aunt, or grandma,

  2. My mother wears jewelry every day, Roslyn. She is known for her large rings, bracelets and necklaces to match her outfits. As she is 100, you can imagine how much jewelry she has amassed. Whenever I travel to Arizona, she often asks me for a specific colour of necklace. Everything is about matching it to her clothes. My mother is definitely the “statement necklace” kind of lady and she carries it off in style too.

Jewelry is a great suggestion as far as a gift, although as you know, the key is to purchase what the receiver would like, not what the giver likes. And to make sure it suits her stature and taste, is a given. Beautiful necklaces. Hope you sell them all to people who want to surprise and honour their mothers this Mother’s Day.

Your mom passed her love of jewelry along to you Beverley Golden. Nice that she wears and enjoys all her treasures as I know you do.
I love the point you make about giving a gift that the receiver will like. Exactly one of the ideas behind this post is to help givers think about the receiver in a particular way, ‘I love Boho but does my mom’? Gift selection requires some thought and jewelry taste, like art, is so personalized. It can be done with ease as you know, be it selecting her favorite color, style, length and so on.
We enjoyed giving our readers these helpful guides based on personality and style.

  3. My Mum would love all your jewellery as I do. I’m pretty sure she would be with me in especially loving the statement necklace with emerald, purple and berry pink beads – such beautiful colours. I like how you have matched jewellery styles to personality traits – makes it a much more thoughtful gift when you pair these.

  4. You all do wonderful work.. and if I was talking to my mother right now, I’d likely buy her one… but haven’t spoken to her since Nov when I pushed my 19 year old out for some good old fashion tough love and my mother undermined my role as a parent and enabled my daughter who isn’t motivated… sad when grandparents don’t know how to help their children and grandchildren and make it worse… sorry, got off topic.. but Roz, I love your jewelry

  5. Love the lamp glass with frost green surrounding – your pieces are so beautiful and unique! I have my eye on one of the bib pieces I saw last week 🙂

    1. Thanks Kim for your compliment. The lampwork piece you admire, Argus, just sold. We do have other Lampwork pieces , including a new one. So if you have your eye on a piece, remember they are one-of-a-kind.

  6. My Mom and I have very different taste in jewelry, Roslyn, which is normal because we are very different people! I go for delicate pieces while she loves chunky antique silver chokers and double string pearls. The best part is that she carries it off with panache and then everyone copies her. LOL. Your Statement Necklace Lapis is the one I can see her wearing because Lapis is one of her favorite stones. Awesome collection as always!

We are so aware that many are without their moms. I too. What piece would you select for her Jane Gramlich and is there a necklace you would choose for yourself?

  8. Your pieces are stunning, Roslyn. You really have a great eye for color. Jewelry is forever a personal treasure. I know I love every piece anyone has ever given to me. Each item was wrapped in love.

  10. So many wonderful pieces, Roslyn. I especially liked the abalone necklace. I saw your comment earlier where you said the Lucite flowers were handpainted, so I went back and looked at them again with a new sense of appreciation. Beautiful work!

Exactly Brenda Niemeyer which was why we decided to do a blog not only as a guide but does have you stop and think of what the receiver would really like.

  11. Ha!! I’m not at all in the ‘trendsetter’ category, but I love one of the lariats, so I’m going to tell my kids I’m a ‘trendsetter’.

I don’t know my mom – she left at birth and she died last July. But I am a mom and I love receiving gifts from my children’s hearts – to see how they ‘see me’, which always opens my eyes to something new about myself.

Exactly Joy. When the person selecting the gift takes time to think about the person, it not only end up being the ‘perfect’ present, but tells us something about ourselves. Hope you do call yourself a ‘trendsetter’ to see the response.

Thanks, Joyce Hansen for your compliment. It is exactly what many people said as they went around to see other crafters at shows, then returned to our booth. That was always extra special.

  12. Beautiful selection of your work, Roz. And I love that you use the adage “It’s the thought that counts” as thoughtful inspiration. Different styles for different tastes – you seem to have something for everyone!!

  13. Ros – I know I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: the thing that I love about your jewelry is the very thing I always look for – most pieces could be transferred from a t-shirt to a ballgown. Every once in a while I get invited to a costume jewelry party, and the hostess usually asks us to wear a solid-color shirt. But my experience is that many of the multi-colored pieces would be well-modeled on prints and plaids, as well.

    1. Thanks, Joan Poter, Sounds like you really know how to put things together and enjoy doing so. We do pair prints with statement necklaces as well. Would love to see how you style pieces. A costume jewelry party sounds like lots of fun.

  14. Hi Roslyn,

Oh my, all those necklaces are so unique! Love them! My mom would wear the lariat necklace of waxy chalcedony , she would definitely love that. You know already that depending on my mood, I love trying different styles. So it is so hard for me to pick just necklace!

I hope you have a wonderful day!

    Zaria
