5 Tips to Wearing Purple

Roslyn Fashion & Jewelry: Your Life in Color, Jewelry Care & Tips fashion, jewelry, Purple

You wouldn’t think of purple as a fall color but it is right up there as a favorite. You know it seems to add drama to just about any outfit and manages to create an instant impact. When asked about the color people usually associate it with the color of royalty, wealth and leadership.

Wonder if that’s why it is my favorite as well as many others. Purple is created through a combination of 2 opposites, red and blue- warm and cool, feminine and masculine and appears in dozens of shades from indigo to plum, eggplant, violet, lavender and royal deep purple. My favorite shades are aubergine, plum and mauve.

Why do we love it?

It makes a strong style statement, has some authority and for me is more feminine and richer than basic black. It can be worn to business or when casually, I think it makes you look lively. If you want to be really noticed, then wear purple head to toe. I wouldn’t and prefer to wear it in small doses. Somehow I never seem to have enough purple tops or earrings. Do you?

5 Tips to Wearing Purple

1. Wear a purple blouse of any shade under a gray or black suit.

2. Pair purple with brown. It tones it down when you wear purple with brown slacks or under a brown blazer

3. Use purple just in your accessories- a purple beaded necklace, earring, handbag, scarf, belt or shoes. Looks really great when wearing a monochromatic neutral outfit.

4. Try using plum or taupe shades of eye shadow, lip gloss or nail polish.

5. If you wear an all purple outfit or dress, tone it down with black or brown shoes and accessories. Think twice before you go head to toe purple.

I loved going to work each day for 30 years as a professional career counselor. When I retired, I explored my creativity and regard for crafts until I discovered beading. At age 68 I turned my new found passion- jewelry design, into a business. At age 72 I took on learning about social media marketing and developing my computer skills. I am sharing my journey from inception, to frustration, to elation -in the hope of inspiring others that 'it is not too late to start again'. Welcome to my re-invention!

  1. Since I’m a fellow purple lover as you know, I loved reading this and looking at the gorgeous collages you put together for this post. I can also relate to what they say about purple lovers. A lot of it does resonate with who I am. That was so interesting.

  2. I have on occasion gone “head to toe” in purple. Even down to the pantyhose! And it was stunning! Purple is one of my very favorite colors, and I love to pair it with pink, gray and black. Of course I pinned this to my “All things purple” board! And now that we have purple covered, are you going to do a blog on pink?

Meryl Hershey Black, Last year when rebranding we actually chose the name Enchanted Amethyst. I loved it but when I did a display for a show, saw it just didnt fit our eclectic designs overall. After much searching we hit upon EarthandMoonDesign, a perfect fit for my daughter’s style and mine.

Pat Moon, you are adorable. You are reminding me that over the summer it looked like I had switched to aquas, but happily have returned to purple. I think its a good idea to have a few favorites and certainly colors that work well together and on you.

Yes, Kristen Wilson, this was a fun blog to create. Given I have always loved purple, its true, not enough clothes choices in shades, fabrics, & styles I like. When I open my closet, I’m sadly not overwhelmed with purple.

  7. I’ve always loved purple and am so glad it’s become popular. I was reluctant to wear it because of the poem… part of which says.. “when I get old I”ll wear purple.” Thanks so much for your post about purple. My front and garage service doors are purple! 🙂

  8. Nice blog. It is always neat to learn how to put colors together. My daughter is much better at it then me and she is five, I am ashamed to say. She is already a fashionista and I am always in black, browns and grays.

Yakini, if you added a beaded necklace with some color to your comfy black, brown, gray, it would brighten your outfit up and lift you up as well. Maybe for holiday you will treat yourself. Maybe let your daughter pick it out.

  9. Roz, I just love all the beautiful colleagues you made up to show off Purple. Purple is one of my favorite colors too! Your necklace called Cattylea and the Purple manicure are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing all these wonderful ideas!
